I wished her happy birthday this morning. She's 79. I asked her what she wanted to do today and she said she just wants to stay in bed and watch tv. I think she is depressed because she is thinking this may be her last.
I don't know how to make this day pleasant for her, at least have her enjoy her day and have her forget about her cancer for once. She doesn't want to do anything.
Happy Birthday, Mom. I love you!

Spoiled Bitch
I got a package from the Royal Mail! Hop Along woke me up at the crack of dawn to make sure my birthday package arrived and wanted us to open the box together.
«Check out what he got me!»
Whatever did I do to deserve such a plethora of gifts?!? Thanks so much Hop Along tribe!
And Hop Along, you certainly outdid yourself! You're way too good to me and I don't deserve you! I love you and I miss you. I can't wait to see you in November!

Korean Birthday Feast
I just came back from my birthday feast and holy smokes it was A LOT of food!
First course was seaweed soup. Then the waitress came out with the banchan, an array of side dishes that you have with your main dish (and you can have as many refills as you like and yes it's free!)...

Dried fish, fish cake strips, pickled radish, seaweed salad, pickeled eggplant, kim chee, kim chee cauliflower, baby bok choy salad, and bean sprout salad
Second course was Haemul Pajon, seafood pancake with shrimp, clam, and squid and onion served with a dipping sauce. Really good!...

Third course was my favorite dish Jap Chae, clear sweet potato noodles sauteed with vegetables and beef...

Fourth course, the waitress brought out two sizzling platters of Dak Gul (grilled chicken) and kalbi(grilled beef)...

By the end of the meal we were so stuffed, we waddled out of the restaurant with enough leftovers to last us a week! But it didn't stop here!
My parents got me a pack of cake batter deluxe ice cream cupcakes from cold stone creamery...

So pink, it's pank!

Of course I only ate just the one! ;)

Look at this work of art! There are 5 layers: An airy whipped cream frosting w/ rainbow sprinkles, cake batter ice cream (don't knock it til' you've tried it), chocolate fudge, and red velvet cake encased in a Belgian chocolate hard shell cup.
I screwed my diet but what the hell, I have a right to live a little. It's my day and I can do whatever I want. My parents really enjoyed their first introduction to Korean food, they liked it so much they are thinking of laying over in Korea in their next trip to the Philippines.
All in all I enjoyed my gluttonous day! It was a perfect birthday celebration with the exception of missing a certain someone. You know who are. ;(

Iz Ma Birfday!
This year is definitely making up for last year's birthday! My parents came storming in my room very early this morning singing Happy Birthday in Tagalog off the top of their lungs!
Yesterday they surprised me with a 46" hdtv mounted to my bedroom wall AND a blu-ray player AND the full disc set of Planet Earth AND an underwater disc. I spent last night watching Planet Earth. The cinematography is absolutely stunning and the picture quality from the blu-ray was so pristine you can even sense texture. I was in awe! Richard Attenborough's narration lulled me to sleep. BBC makes the best documentaries.

Here it is in all its HDTV glory! That polar bear cracked me up! Hehe (BTW it's not mounted slanted on my wall, my aim just sucks!)
Now I am off to workout a calorie deficit to make room for my Korean BBQ feast later. Mmmmm...bulgogi, jap chae, bimbimbap, and all the banchan fixings...I can't wait! :D
My parents are the best! You rock, Mom & Dad!

You Can't Take Irishmen Anywhere
Rewind to Plough and Stars last Sunday...
So we were enjoying the music, Craig was enjoying his pint of properly poured Guinness. As Craig got up to order another pint at the bar, he got to talking to a dude from Dundalk which is STAUNCH Republican and an IRA stronghold. Duldalk is just across the border from Northern Ireland. Craig comes back and says that he's a sound guy. Craig tells me that he asked where he was from. Of course, Craig said Belfast. Dundalk further probes and asks where in Belfast. Craig said the Shankill. (Innocent enough but proved to be a big mistake later in the night). Dundalk then asks, "So you're a Prod then?". Craig didn't take this to offense and says, "Yes, but my family was never into the Protestant vs. Catholic bullshit." Dundalk agrees and says it's all a bunch of nonsense. A few minutes later he joins us at the table and I agree he was a sound guy at first, a little drunk though but that's Irish for ya nothing out of the ordinary. He bought us a round of drinks. Craig and Dundalk got to chatting and reminiscing about old haunts in Belfast.
Now the next thing that happened, I have no idea how it all ensued because I was engrossed in the music. But later in the night, things got nasty. By the end of their hours long conversation, I could feel the tension and was getting a little worried that a brawl was going to take place. All I know is Craig got frustrated so he got up to go to the bathroom and the Dundalk guy followed. My heart was beating fast and I was worried. Craig comes out of the bathroom and says let's get the fuck out of here. Confused but didn't ask questions, I just followed him out of there. He says, "We're never going in there again. As a matter for fact, it's best that we stay away from any Irish pubs or any Irish while I am visiting here!". Here I am waiting for a taxi at 2am thinking, "What the duck happened?".
Any further commentary or recollection would be heresay on my part so here is an email of Craig's side of the story to one of his peeps back home:
We went back to that Irish bar the next night because there was some traditional live music Maddy wanted to hear. The night started of great and ended with me punching a fella in the toilet.
This man with a southern Irish accent was sitting at the bar and when I was up getting a drink we had a quick chat. He was fairly drunk at that stage. Half and hour later he comes and sits with us and it's all good. Says he's from Dundalk and has lived in San Francisco since 1990 and owns his own construction company which he gives me his business card for. I'm thinkin, this dude might come in handy. He goes on to tell us he spent a lot of time in Belfast and even on the Shankill years ago. He made a quick remark about serving some prison time but didn't say why and I didn't ask. So he's just talkin away about Ireland and how he doesn't give a shut about religion and the usual shit. He bought us a drink and we bought him a drink and so on. He was repeating himself quite a bit but sure that's drunk people for ya. So then he asks me something about Ian Paisley and I didn't really understand the question so I asked him to repeat the question. He asked me again 3 times and I still couldn't quite understand exactly what he was asking because the question didn't make sense. So I said, sorry mate I don't understand what you mean and he came out with, "so you think it's alright that I was interned and put in prison for 10 years for no reason?" he then went off on a rant about being put in prison for nothing and how he couldn't believe I said what I said (I actually didn't say anything).
He was getting more and more nasty the longer he went on and Maddy is looking at me all worried like what da duck is happening here. So I got up and went to the toilet to let him chill out a bit. I'm takin a piss when the door opens and in he walks and grabs my shoulder. So I turned around and clubbed him and he went flyin into a cubical. I went out and grab Maddy and my jacket and leg it up the street.lol. I think he's full of shit. I seriously doubt someone with a 10 year prison sentence on their record would we allowed to go live in America. Probably just his line of Irish bullshit for the yanks.
Craig
Response from his peep in Norn Iron:
Hi Craig,
The chap you punched would have to be atleast 10-12 years older than myself to have ever been interned. Operation Demetrius was an out right failure since the army had practised the operation one week before and thus the PIRA had caught on and moved across the border. It was the official IRA, a socialist grouping who were rounded up along with well known loyalists. The vast amount of internees were released after 2 years as it became obvious they were not a threat to the government in northern ireland. Internment did however become a badge of honour among republicans.
A better question would have been what he thought of the american internment camps set up to imprison the japanese who lived in america after the bombing of pearl harbour in 1942. It is of some interest to note that the internment act has never been revoked and can be invoked during times of civil unrest.
I can't believe this bullshit has followed us on our holiday. My god, we're 5,386 miles away! I've lived in Norn Iron short enough to get the good sense to never take any Troubles story that is spoonfed to you at face value because there are two sides to every story and every story is not necessarily true without deeper investigation of THE FACTS. So who is to be believed?
As a yank, I will never get it. EVER. But what the hell do I know? Just because I've read a few textbooks doesn't make me an expert. And pretending to be one will just make me look like a patronizing idiot. Craig, like many other of my friends in Belfast both Catholic and Protestant who come from a younger generation, just don't give a damn! They don't want to hear about it. They don't want to talk about it. They don't want to think about it. They just want to get on with their lives like everybody else in the world as I keep saying over and over to people who ask me about Belfast. Their eye is on the future, not the past.

Lazy Easter Sunday
So Part 3 of Craig's birthday bash...
Last Sunday we woke up around 3pm! We were so exhausted from our action packed Saturday, that we decided to relax and kick it.
We took a stroll towards Hayes Valley for some grub and take in the sites along the way...

San Francisco City Hall

Environmental sculptures by Patrick Dougherty.

Even the homeless take holidays

Hayes Valley

Gourmet Burgers at Flippers

Dolores Street. Hilly, quiet and beautiful, it's shaded by palm trees and lined by grand old Victorians. Dolores Park remains a favorite for those who wish to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Mission.

Mission Dolores, the oldest building in San Francisco founded in 1776

Someone left a cheesecake for the Virgin Mary and boots so she can walk off the calories

Dolores Park
Later that night, we headed back to the Plough and Stars for their Sunday Traditional Irish Music session...
8 musicians jamming around the table. I apologize for the bad picture quality but the audio is great!
All was good in the hood until the next post...

Global Trekking in the City
Much thanks to everyone for giving me the real update on the current situation (or as Norn Irons would say sit-chee-AY-shun) in Norn Iron. I was thisclose to cancelling my return flight home. LOL!
Now that I've gotten over the water contamination scare, let's get back to our regularly scheduled programming...PART 2 OF CRAIG'S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND! YAY! I know you all have been dying to know and losing sleep at night. Hehe.
We started off last Saturday with a big American breakfast at Lori's Diner. Craig loves this place because they serve bottomless coffee and the waiter is chatty and super nice.

Craig's impersonation of Bono
We then headed off to Japantown for the Cherry Blossom Festival...

We learned all about Japanese culture...

Ikebana - the art of floral arrangement

Observed a Japanese tea ceremony

Craig was drooling over the Samurai weaponry exhibit

Our jaws dropped at the amazing Taiko drumming!

We sampled many Japanese-American delicacies like Spam Musubi!
Later that night we had dinner at El Mansour for a Moroccan 5 course feast...

When you step inside, it feels as if you've been transported into a Bedouin tent in the middle of the Sahara
It was a really unique dining experience. Before the meal started, we washed our hands in warm water. We ate our 5 course meal entirely with our hands while we watched the beautiful bellydancer shake her hips from table to table.

Ooooh! The scary bellydance monster! I laughed at Craig the whole time the bellydancer came out. He was afraid of her. I could tell he wanted to run to the bathroom and hide! Belfast boys are so shy! It was like pulling teeth trying to get him to tuck a dollar in her brassiere. He was so frightened, he made me do it! Haha!
At the end of the meal, our waiter came out again with the warm water to wash our hands but this time he sprinkled delicious smelling jasmine oil on our palms and fingers. Afterwards, we were served sweet, frothy Moroccan tea from up high much like this...

We came out satisfied, relaxed and pampered. Craig was very impressed with El Mansour and wouldn't mind coming back again despite the scary belldancer! He said it was an all-encompassing sensory experience of sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound!
Craig was craving for a pint so we hopped on a bus just outside the restaurant to go to the most authentic Irish pub in San Francisco, the Plough and Stars. Craig and I really liked this place. Like with other pubs in America, it didn't look like Ireland threw up all over the place. It was just a simple pub with long tables and benches and chairs where everyone just hangs out, have friendly conversation, and enjoy a pint. We also liked the fact that we didn't have to shout down the house at each other over blaring music. Even though there was a live band, the volume was just right that you can comfortably talk to each other without losing your voice in the morning.

And guess what? Craig finally found a pub in San Francisco that pours a decent pint of Guinness! In his 3 years experience visiting various "Irish" pubs in San Fran, he concluded that nobody in America can perfect the art of pouring a decent pint. Much like that of the Japanese tea ceremony, it takes a great deal of skill and years to master. He was never satisfied and was downright apalled at how some bartenders poured Guinness straight from the tap without having it settle. Or they didn't tilt the glass at exactly 45 degrees. Or he would be served a pint and the head would either be too small or too big! Oh the sacrilege! He wanted to jump behind the bar and pour it himself!
But at the Plough and Stars his pint was the epitome of perfection, he is now a happy bunny! He can finally have a true taste of home away from home!

Happy Guinness!
To be continued...

Craig's Birthday Surprise!
In the previous post, I mentioned that I had a special birthday surprise waiting for Craig the upcoming weekend. Well I'm back and we had such a fantastic time! We did so much that I am going to have to split this post into three parts.
Because it was raining for 3 days last week, I felt really bad that we stayed indoors for his big 34, so I booked 3 nights at the Hotel Monaco in San Francisco, a fauxcation as the cheap and trendy would say. With a 30% yelp discount off an already reduced rate, it was steal! Let me tell ya, this hotel rocks! Not only is it one of the hippest hotels in SF but pet friendly too! Our room was very cozy. It was like staying in a mansion of a very wealthy friend. Small and intimate. The staff were very accommodating and nice. We even had a complimentary bottle of wine waiting for us which was a very nice touch...

Our cozy little room

Sitting area in the front area. Lots of cozy couches and a nice place to chill in front of the fire. It felt like being in your own living room.

Another sitting area

A grand marble staircase
Later that night we caught the muni on Market and went to the Castro. The Castro was lively on a Friday night. Lots of people on the streets, there was a nice buzz. People eating in cafes and restaurants, you can barely hear the din of live music outside the clubs, street musicians on every other block. As luck would have it, I even bumped into my friend from grammar school who I haven't seen in a very long time. We ended up eating in Sliders Diner, a hole in the wall burger place. We were happy just chilling with the locals and watching Wrestlemania. Craig liked it because it was a no bullshit place. You order, you find a table, and you stuff your face. There was no pretentious waiter breathing down our necks and asking us if everything is OK every 5 minutes which can be pretty annoying!

The F Castro! Oh how I miss an efficient public transportation system! Belfast can learn a thing or two from San Francisco!

Craig feeling at home...hehe
This pretty much sums up our first night. Stay tuned for more wacky adventures!
